Text Box: Step 1.  Use a Corrugated Box

It’s best to use a brand new box, but if you choose to reuse a box, make sure it is rigid, has no punctures or tears, and that the corners are intact.  Remember to remove or completely cover any old labels.

Choose a box that is
strong enough to be
suitable for the weight
of the contents.

(Also, choose the right
size box for your items!)

Text Box: Step 2.  Provide Internal Protection

Proper cushioning of your goods will help ensure that they arrive in perfect condition.  There are several types of cushioning material, each designed for specific uses.

Bubble Wrap:  Best for protecting lightweight items.  Wrap the item carefully, paying special attention to edges and corners.

Polystyrene “Peanuts”:  Designed to fill gaps in packages with light- to medium-weight items.  Overfill the box, then close flaps gently.  Do not use with flat or narrow products that can shift around the peanuts.

Corrugated Liners:  Increases strength and improve overall package performance.  Also provides protection against box cutters.

Crumpled Paper:  Used as a filler for light- to medium-weight items.  Must be tightly crumpled for best results.

Remember to protect fragile items from each other, as well as from the sides of the box!  Very fragile items should be packed in separate boxes inside the shipping box.

Text Box: 3.  Close Your Box

Use pressure sensitive plastic or nylon-reinforced tape.

Apply at least three strips (2” tape) to both the top and bottom of your box.

For best results, do not use masking tape, cellophane tape, duct tape, string, or paper overwrap.
